Calvary Baptist Commissions Stephen Ministers By Web Staff On Sunday, May 23, 2010, Calvary Baptist Church commissioned six members as Stephen Ministers. Pastor, Rev. Dr. Gregory E. Thomas presented a charge to the Stephen Ministers, along with a charge to the congregation, to pray for  and support them. Rev. Alex O. Stone preached the commissioning sermon. 
A Stephen Minister is a congregation member who comes forward, or is selected, trained, commissioned and supervised by Stephen Leaders to provide one-to-one lay Christian care to individuals in need (not couples, families, or anyone under 18 yrs old) on behalf of the congregation. Stephen Ministers typically are assigned one care receiver at a time, and meet with that person for about one hour each week. Stephen Ministers usually serve for a minimum of two years, which includes an initial 50 hours of training followed by twice-monthly supervision and continuing education sessions.
Stephen Minist ers are not a substitute for someone needing a profession al caregiver, and are not trained to care for individuals needing this type of care. Stephen Leaders are Brother George Ultrino, Deaconess Erika Moreno and Sister Yvonne Boyd.The newly commissioned Stephen Ministers are Brother Joseph Devoe, Brother Jean-Marc Dorestant, Deacon Marlowe Hicks, Sister Doris Audrea Mercer, Sister Audrey Rucker, and Sister Erica Wilder.
We began taking referrals for caregivers on Sunday, May 9, 2010.
